The Art of Software Security Testing

The book "The Art of Software Security Testing" published by Symantec Press, Fall 2006 can now be preordered here on amazon.com. The book's authors are Chris Wysopal, Lucas Nelson, Elfriede Dustin and Dino Dai Zovi. Symantec has reported that attackers are moving away from large, multiple purpose attacks against traditional security devices such as firewalls and routers.  At Symantec 69% of the vulnerabilities reported in the last half of 2005 were in web applications.  This book addresses the Secure Software Development Lifecycle (SSDL). This book’s objective is to teach the engineers who build and test software that in order to protect their customers they must perform security testing throughout the development process.  Unless security is addressed throughout the development lifecycle, software will inevitably have security issues that can lead to the theft of financial information, the loss of data and performance, and the compromise of personal data.  ISBN: 0-321-30486-1

Also coming soon, downloadable security testing code snippets and other material. Watch here at amazon.com for more security discussions, soon.

Worst Practices that can make a project go awry. While best practices have to be adopted to each project and may be the key to project success, sometimes the worst practices are implemented instead. This first article of a three part series takes a look at how people can doom a project: When the Best Laid Plans Go Awry: The People Problem (Part I)

Choosing and Managing the Ideal Test Team by Lloyd Roden

People are the most important asset of any company: Do we agree with this statement? The majority of us would answer yes, the main exception would be if we owned a fully automated robotics company! It is the people that make the company what it is. People are important - we therefore need to invest time in people as well as tasks related issues. Orthogonally Speaking

Is your testing effort facing an impossibly wide choice of test parameters? Shooting in the dark can yield hit-and-miss results -- and that is just not very effective. When your testing effort faces an impossibly wide choice of test parameters, the Orthogonal Array Testing System technique can be a very useful method for deriving a suitable set of test cases. Risk Based Testing, Strategies for Prioritizing Tests

Often all other activities before test execution are delayed. This means testing has to be done under severe pressure. It is out of question to quit the job, nor to delay delivery or to test badly. The real answer is a prioritization strategy in order to do the best possible job with limited resources. See Risk Based Testing, Strategies for Prioritizing Tests for a solution to this dilemma
